Brett Lawrie shines as Toronto Blue Jays hammer Atlanta Braves 12-4 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays hammered Atlanta Braves 12-4 at Turner Field in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday, June 10 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell will be very pleased with the way his team bounced back after losing the first two games of this season.
Toronto are still within a touching distance of American League East Division leaders Tampa Bay Rays and it will be exciting to see if they can replace them at the top of the table before the All Star Break.
"The way things started out, it wasn't looking real promising," Farrell said. "We were able to string a number of hits together. ... We were able to string together not only the six runs but it continued on through the middle and latter part of the game."
The offence produced a masterful performance for the Blue Jays, putting up a huge total on the board. Coming back from behind, Farrell and company registered an emphatic win at Turner Field. Atlanta, on the other hand, blew away an early 4-0 lead.
David Ross, Freddie Freeman and Chipper Jones made the most of scoring opportunities to put the Braves in a strong position but the Blue Jays staged a marvellous come back to score twelve runs in four innings.
Yan Gomes singled to left in the fifth inning to score the first run for his team. Third baseman Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus put up a fine batting performance in the fifth inning to level score at 4-4.
"It didn't start off the way we wanted, but it just took a bit of a spark to get it going and it just kept going from there," Lawrie said in a post game interview.
Lawrie and Rasmus continued to take advantage of Braves’ errors on the field as they both homered in the sixth inning to put the Blue Jays 9-4 ahead.
J.P. Arencibia hit a sacrifice fly to centre and Kelly Johnson tripled to deep right to end the game on a winning note. Starting pitcher Ricky Romero gave up four runs while lasting for only four innings.
