Brett Morse favours lifetime ban on past drug offenders
Brett Morse, the Welsh No.1 athlete, has favoured a lifetime ban on the athletes with drug offending charges in the past.
Morse, merely 17 years old, participates in Senior Men’s competitions besides representing his country in the Under-20 discus throw competitions.
The British number 4 for the junior category, who is ranked among the top 25 discus throwers of the UK for senior men, is being regarded as an ace for Great Britain for the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.
Besides Morse, a number of other athletes have also expressed similar views about the athletes with ‘tainted’ pasts.
The Pernarth product was of the view that nothing will annoy him more if some British rival with a positive drug test in the past ended up grabbing his place, using unfair means.
Some of the British athletes, who have been charged for a drug offense in the past, and who are now waiting for the BOAs decision on a lifetime ban ahead of the next year’s Olympics competition are: Carl Myerscough, Dwain Chambers and David Millar.
While talking about Myerscough, who happens to be a potential rival of Morse in British Discus throw athlete place, the youngster said, “It is hard when you are considering this issue. Carl is a good friend of mine and he has been like a father figure to
the other throwers. It is nothing personal, but I am against drugs and the rules, which were there when he failed the test, currently state he should not go to the Olympics”.
Morse, however, maintained a stance that he was not sure whether Carl had really used the drugs as the veteran, who claimed the British record for 2006, was claiming to be innocent.
While principally denying a place for his close rival amid the drug offense, Morse also expressed his fear of losing his place in the next year’s mega athletics event, provided that Carl is given a green signal to carry on with his sporting career.
Expressing his fears, the Welsh athlete said, “But, regardless, if the BOA rule gets overturned he could still get one of the places which could be mine. I am going to be annoyed if that happens because in theory he should have a lifetime ban. I wake up
every day and think about the Olympics and every session is about reaching London”.
The stellar performer, who has been in the limelight right from the start of his career, said that ever since the announcement regarding London hosting the Olympics was made, he was determined to qualify for them.
While defending his position as a potential representative at the mega athletic event, he said that clean athletes who had put in efforts to establish their careers should not be punished, particularly at a time when they were ambitious to participate in
the home games.
