Brett Myers’ pitching helps Houston Astros beat Colorado Rockies 11-2 – MLB Update
Houston Astros’ starting pitcher, Brett Myers had a tremendous day with the ball as he pitched six innings with an ERA of 4.31 and struck-out six batters in the Astros’ 11-2 victory against the Colorado Rockies at Minute Maid Park, Houston on September 23.
In the first inning, Rockies were able to score just one run while Astros added five quick runs to get a 5-1 lead. Dexter Fowler bunted a double-run drive towards deep centre-field and Eric Young Jr. posted the first run for Rockies. On the other side, J.B.
Shuck scored a tie run when Angel Sanchez hit a double-run drive deep. The second and third runs for Astros were taken by Sanchez and J.D. Martinez when Carlos Lee doubled to deep centre-field.
Lee scored a single run when Matt Downs doubled to deep centre-field. The last run during the first inning was taken by Downs when Chris Johnson drove a single-run shot to left-field. Astros took a 6-1 lead by scoring one run at the bottom of second inning.
Sanchez got away with a single run when Martinez struck a double-run drive to deep centre-field.
Seth Smith walked and Jordan Pacheco moved to second base in the third inning but Fowler ground out, Ty Wigginton flied out and Kevin Kouzmanoff struck-out without taking any run. Similarly, Astros batters also failed to get runs at the bottom of the third
inning. Myers gave away just one walk, one run, four hits and one earned run on his 88 pitches.
At the bottom of fourth inning, Astros posted two runs to raise their lead 8-1. Lee drove towards left-field and Shuck contributed a single run when Sanchez advanced to third base. The second run was taken by Sanchez when Downs hit a grounder into fielder’s
choice to third base and Lee was saved to reach at third base on the throwing error of Rockies’ Kouzmanoff.
Astros continued to extend their lead as they added two collective runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take a 10-1 lead. In the seventh inning, Rockies added one run while Astros also posted one run and ended the game 11-2. Chris Nelson hit a one-run homer
towards left-field to keep the Rockies alive.
Consequently, Astros lead the four-game series 2-0 against the Rockies at Houston.
