Brett Myers shines as Houston Astros defeat Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 – MLB Update
The Houston Astros played a big sixth inning as the club beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 in the series opener at Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles on Friday, June 17.
The Dodgers achieved an early 1-0 with the help of an RBI single by Matt Kemp in the bottom of the first inning but after this run, they remained scoreless until the bottom of the ninth inning, in which they made two more runs. The Astros, on the other hand,
opened their account in the fourth inning when Chris Johnson blistered a line drive single to tie the score at 1-all.
After one inning delay, the Astros completely opened their bat and blistered a devastating five runs in the sixth inning. Carlos Lee drove in an RBI single off the Giants starter Ted Lilly to initiate the shattering inning. Then Clint Barmes touched an RBI
double to force the Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly to replace his starter with reliever Josh Lindblom.
Mattingly made a move but it did not work out for him as the Astros Jason Bourgeois hit a hard grounder for an RBI double to take his team into a 6-1 irrefutable lead. Josh struck back and did not let the Astros make any further runs until the end of his
one inning spell in the eighth.
In the middle of the eighth inning, he handed the ball to Blake Hawksworth who gave the Astros’ Carlos Corporan an RBI single that sent the Dodgers under a 7-1 deficit.
The Astros’ starter Brett Myers, after allowing an RBI single in the first inning, made a perfect come-back and did not let the Dodger come close to his fastballs. Myers crushed the Dodgers batting line-up by striking-out six batters.
"I know our bullpen has been throwing a lot this past week," Myers said. "Tonight I was able to keep my pitch count down and get a chance to go out and pitch in the ninth. It's a lot better to pitch ahead in the count than behind."
He allowed two more runs in the ninth inning but until now, the Astros had cemented their 26th win in the 2011 Major League Baseball season.
