Brett Rumford becomes the clubhouse leader at Ballantine’s Championship: European Tour
Second round of the Ballantine’s Championship teed off on Friday, April 29. Blackstone Golf course is the host of the Championship this year. Some of the players who had early morning tee off, posted their rounds early.
It was Australia’s Brett Rumford who dominated the second round and emerged as the clubhouse leader. He currently leads the field by a slight margin but was quite happy with his performance.
Rumford played like a champion during his round. He carded a fantastic round of nine-under par, 63 which is the lowest so far during the second day. The Australian started his round and was behind on the leader board also. He did not wary of the elite field which was playing around him and carved his way on the score board.
The 33-year-old Australian also played some text book shots during his round. He had a total of nine birdies on his score card. Rumford was bogey-free for his round and was more than satisfied with his putting stroke. He was holding most of the crucial putts for birdie.
Rumford has been playing on the European Tour for a while now. It was his past experience which was an advantage for him as he displayed amazing golf during his round. He was also hitting the ball long off the tee and his broom putter certainly helped him put up this score.
Rumford is a three-time European Tour title holder and is hoping to add another victory to his career. His last win came almost four years back at the Omega European Masters where he won in a playoff against Phillip Archer. Since then, it has been a struggle for the Australian.
This is a great chance for Rumford, who took the lead after he concluded his round. He sounded confident about his round and is hoping to show the same performance on the third day also.
The overnight leader, Damien McGrane was among the groups which had a late tee time. He has yet to progress through his second round.
Weather conditions on the second day remained the same as there was a bit chill in the air.
