Brett Simpson opens up about his performance and the waves at Bells Beach
America’s professional surfer Brett Simpson opened up about the recently concluded Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach where he showed a significant improvement from his performance at the opening stop of the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Title
Series.
In an exclusive interview with the ASP, the 27-year-old Californian surfer revealed that of all the waves that the surfers had to surf in during their time on the ASP World Tour, the waves on offer at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia, were definitely the
toughest.
According to him, the waves hardly gave surfer any room to let loose, thus forcing them to stick to the basics. He pointed out the former two-time ASP World Champion Mick Fanning and his fellow countryman Joel Parkinson were pretty adept at doing exactly
that and that was what made those two a formidable threat.
Simpson failed to get off to a solid start at the 2012 ASP World Tour, getting an equal 25th place finish at Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast in Australia. However, he exhibited a much stronger rhythm and solid form at Bells Beach.
When asked about the noticeable change in his form, the American surfer revealed that he had arrived at the event site of Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach a week earlier in order to get familiar with the waves and gain a better understanding of the surfing conditions.
This allowed him to feel much more comfortable and confident during his heats and helped him to make an equal 9th finish.
Simpson was sent packing from the second stop of the 2012 ASP World Tour by Australia’s Kai Otton in Round 5. However, the Californian surfer did not go down without putting up a strong fight and gave his rival a run for his money. Even though his performance
was unable to get him through into the Quarter-finals, it is expected to give him a confidence boost as he makes his way to Billabong Rio Pro that is scheduled to go down at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from May 9 – 20. There is no doubt that he would have a series
of tough battles at hand, but Simpson has proved from time to time that he has what it takes to defeat that strongest of rivals on his day.
