Brewers’ Gonzalez all braced to be back as backup shortstop – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers general manager has confirmed that the club is to sign a one-year deal with Alex Gonzalez. Chances are that he would be with the club as this year’s backup. The last year, it is to be noted, Gonzalez played as Opening Day shortstop.
He will be a backup to Jean Segura. Segura, the 23 year old player, was actually acquired from the Los Angeles Angels for Zack Greinke. However, much will depend on how the medical goes which is said to be scheduled for next week.
It is the Milwaukee Brewers’ doctors that will examine the surgically repaired knee of this veteran player. If things go well, he would be part of the team as has been mentioned earlier.
Much as there is anticipation in the air, the Brewers are convinced there would not be any problem in this regard. Physical exam, as the general manager indicated, is likely to go smooth and there won’t be any problem.
"We don't anticipate any problems," Melvin said.
Reports about the possible deal between the team and the player had surfaced in the recent days. It was FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal who came up with the report. It was also suggested that he would earn $1.5 in base salary.
That which also has to be considered if the physical goes well is what the club would do to place him in the 40-man roster. The Brewers have to clear a spot for Gonzalez. Nonetheless, from the look of it, there appears no problem for the Brewers to do.
Like suggested earlier, there was enough of enthusiasm in the Brewers’ camp about the possible move. One of the players who came up with the tweet – being happy and buoyed up, was Chris Narveson.
"Pumped to get Alex Gonzalez back!!" came the tweet of left-hander Chris Narveson soon after the deal became public. "Great teammate and clubhouse presence."
To be seen now is how things go as the Milwaukee Brewers prepare themselves satisfactorily for the newer challenges in the upcoming season.
