Brewers Mike Fiers lauded after his excellent spell against the Cincinnati Reds – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker on Tuesday, August 07, praised Mike Fiers for his outstanding eight-inning spell against the Reds that resulted in the Brewers’ 3-1 victory. Fiers outrivaled Johnny Cueto to snatch the win at a time when the Reds were
supposed to be favourite contenders.
Baker went so far as to admit that it was one of the best games pitched against the Reds. "That's one of the best games pitched against us in a long time," Baker said. "There's not a lot we could do. He's very deceptive with that Tim Lincecum-like delivery."
Johnny Cueto, whom the Reds expected to deliver, could not withstand the resurgent Brewers offence which capitalized on every opportunity given by the starter. Compared to Fiers, Cueto’s record is too impressive, but he was unable to show magic on Tuesday.
Cueto holds 1.19 WHIP this season and 2.58 ERA, having had 14-6 record. He is in fact responsible for bestowing big victories for the Reds. But on Tuesday, it was Fiers who aggressively came down against the Reds, winning sixth game of the season.
With 6-4 record, Fiers holds 1.80 ERA. While Dusty Baker acknowledged the dominance that Fiers showed in Tuesday’s game, the Brewers team manager Ron Roenicke said Fiers is a battler.
"I think he's shown he can pitch," he said. "He's a battler. He baffles guys with all the different stuff he throws."
Fiers gave up the hits – in his eight-inning spell, in his eighth inning when Xavier Paul and Ryan Hanigan went for singles. Retiring 18 batters, Fiers showed his magic as emerging pitcher, capable of outrivaling anyone in the division and league.
With this good display, Fiers has also revived the hopes that the Brewers will be able to have a better result once the season comes to an end. The second half of the season has not been particularly good for the Brewers, but recent wins have inspirited
the team back.
Fiers will play a key role in emboldening the defence, helping the Brewers attain the goals they had set at the start of the year.
