Brewers finalize deal with Tom Gorzelanny – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, December 21, finalized the deal with free-agent pitcher Tom Gorzelanny. Pending physical, the pitcher was reported to have been made a good offer by the Brewers, but the club decided not to comment on it citing multiple reasons.
However, after passing the physical, the pitcher now has two-year $5.7 million contract with the Brewers, along with $300,000 signing bonus plus base salaries of $2.6 million in 2013 and $2.8 million in 2014.
This past season, he posted his career best 2.88 ERA in 44 appearances as reliever, making only one start. The Brewers do not intend to play him as a starter for now as he will expectedly have relief appearances.
Gorzelanny, on the other hand, is all prepared for embracing any role that is assigned to him. But he would like to go for relief appearances for now.
"It turned out to be a good role," he said. "Obviously, I would like to be a starter, and if there was ever a chance to be one, I would be interested, but I also enjoy being a reliever and being in those situations late in a game where you're depended on.
I thought this was the best place for that."
Gorzelanny, it would be pertinent to mention, has had relatively good role in the rotation as well. Back in 2007, he held 14-10 record with 3.88 ERA as he represented the Pittsburgh Pirates in a year when the club bore 94 losses.
But in 2012, the Washington Nationals used him as reliever; which really did bear fruit for the club as he went on to have 2.88 ERA in 44 appearances. Along with that, he was given a chance to start as well.
"I did everything," he said. "I did long, I did short. I got a save in a game [on April 25, when he worked three effective innings against the Padres]. I got a couple of holds. And then I made a start at the end of the year.”
To be seen now is how he performs in the Brewers’ bullpen after a year when the later did not live up to expectations.
