Brewers sign Cole Garner for the Minor-League – MLB News
With the Spring Training around the corner, the Milwaukee Brewers continued making new moves. On Friday, it was the Minor League outfield depth that was to be addressed, as the Brewers signed Cole Garner.
The 28-year old player had previously played for the Colorado Rockies in 2011, appearing in a total of four games. The right-handed hitter has shown signs of dramatic improvement. Take, for example, his performance in 2011.
Batting .258 in 64 games, he smashed six homers and 24 RBIs as he represented the New York Yankees Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre club.
In Minor League, the player has been quite consistent as the stats prove it. With .283 batting average, the player has had 82 home runs and 371 RBIs in his eight Minor League Seasons.
Even though there were some expectations that he might be invited to Spring Training, what is known by now is that he only got invitation for the Minor-League mini-camp.
The Brewers has now had Chris Naverson in the team as well. He is to report to camp this time on February 12 which actually is for pitchers and catchers with their experience in the Major League Baseball with zero to three years.
The left-hander will have a competition in the team, undeniably. The fact that he will be part of the rotation that has Yovani Gallardo in it is indeed quite challenging; something that he is awaiting himself too.
"I think that's what baseball is all about," Narveson said. "It breeds better players and better teams. I think it's going to help us out. Look at last season -- it took a lot more than five guys to get where we needed to be."
Doug Melvin shed light on this aspect. After a year when the club had left a lot to desire when it came to their performance in rotation and bullpen, the Brewers hope things will change with the arrival of the talented young pitchers to the mix.
"Our young pitchers earned an opportunity last year, with the way they pitched, that they should at least be given a chance," Melvin said.
