Question:

Brewing a shandy..?

Has anyone ever brewed and bottled their own shandy before?

I'm thinking of brewing some sort of beer (probably using wheat extract and some pale malt or vice-versa and perhaps cluster hops), and then mixing it with some homemade lemonade during priming, along with some sugar and/or honey. I'll probably go with a 1-to-1 ratio of lemonade to beer, or maybe 2 parts beer to 1 part lemonade.

Have any of you ever done this before? Even if not, do you think if I follow that I'll come out with a good final product?

Thanks for any feedback!

  1. I'm not an expert, but I would say add lemon extract to the secondary for flavoring.  Probably no more than 4-6 ounces for 5 gallons.  I would also use very mild hops, nothing musky or piney.

  2. Using real lemonade will significantly reduce the pH and that may cause the fermentation to not work.  If the pH is below 3.2 you need to be sure the yeast you use can handle it.

  3. Add the lemonade at the end of secondary, to taste.
