Brian Baker astonishes sixth seed Uladzimir Ignatik in quarterfinal – Knoxville Challenger 2011
American qualifier Brian Baker surpassed sixth seeded Belarusian Uladzimir Ignatik in the quarterfinal of the Knoxville Challenger 2011.
On Friday the 11th of November 2011, the two took up the challenge on indoor hard courts of the University of Tennessee’s Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA and after a lengthy two hours and twenty six minutes American Baker outplayed sixth seeded Belarusian Ignatik by bouncing back from a set down to score a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(6).
Opening the first set of the match was Baker and both the players held their respective serves to initiate the scoreboard at 1-1. They once more bagged a service game each and the score had tied at two games each at the end of the fourth game. It was in the fifth game that Ignatik had capitalized on the single breakpoint opportunity in the entire set and managed to a take a mini lead of 4-2 at the end of the sixth game.
The two then matched an eye for an eye and the two kept bagging their service games. The score moved on even terms with no more breakpoints and eventually at the end of the tenth game Ignatik held his serve for the last time to clog the opening set with a 6-4 victory.
Commencing the second set was Baker and once more the two were locked into a fierce battle as they matched a blow for a blow. The score kept tied at three games each by the end of the sixth game. However, Baker cut the goose chase by utilizing the serve-break-serve method and clogged the second set with a 6-3 victory.
Each player had bagged a set apiece by the end of the first two sets and opening the decisive set was Ignatik. The cat and mouse play carried well into the set and neither player wanted the other to take t he lead. At the end of the eighth game, the score had tied at four games each.
In subsequent two games, the players traded in breaks and again tied the score at five games each at the end of the tenth game. Eventually the set was pushed into a tiebreaker as the held their respective serves for the last time.
Amidst the tiebreaker, first to take the lead was Baker but Ignatik made a return and by the twelfth point each player had bagged six points each. However, in the following two games Baker had capitalized on a break and steamrolled past his adversary to clinch the tiebreaker at 8-6.
In doing so; the American qualifier managed to secure a berth in the semi final of the event where he will be facing British Jamie Baker.
