Brian Cashman talks about New York Yankees’ star players – MLB News
After signing a three-year $9 million deal with the New York Yankees on Tuesday, Brian Cashman did not hesitate to appreciate some of the best players in the club.
Brian Cashman, who has been a general manager of the Yankees since 1998, has seen many ups and downs inside and outside the park. He has also witnessed in-park brilliance, which he felt should be discussed with the reporters in a press conference after the
contract.
After recalling his past time and discussing his value in the club, Cashman moved towards his appraisal words for players. It was not surprise for anybody in the conference room to listen to words of appreciation for a pitcher. Cashman went on to discuss
the player’s performance during the last regular and post-season.
While talking specifically about Jorge Posada, Cashman said, "He's been one of the best catchers in Yankee history and a borderline Hall of Famer and obviously is in the free-agent category currently."
Cashman gave value to catcher Russell Martin, who joined the club before the 2011 season and remained dominant with his brilliance, comparing him with Thurman Munson, the Yankees’ unmatched catcher in the 1970s. Cashman stated he was not the part of the
club in the 70s but the quality of leadership Thurman provided in the clubhouse has been written with golden words in history books. Munson is the only Yankee to win both the Rookie of the Year and the Most Valuable Player awards.
Recalling the abilities of Allan James Burnett, who was one of the vital parts of the Yankees in this season, Cashman said, "He's had to deal with adversity because of the inconsistent performance."
Cashman did not forget to mention the name of Nick Swisher, who exercised for 2012 season on Saturday. GM encouraged the player saying that Swisher has been one of the major parts of the batting camp ever since he joined the club. Cashman went on to compliment
Swisher’s tremendous abilities and his past performance for the Yankees. It will be interesting to see what moves Cashman makes with the Yankees’ line-up for the 2012 season.
