Brian Dabul downs Julio Cesar Campozano to reach the semi-final – Manta Open 2011 CH
Brian Dabul of Argentina delivered an absolute master class to pave his way into the semi-final of Manta Open, after beating Julio Cesar Campozano of Ecuador in straight
sets. A strong disposition and clutch shot making was pretty highlighted in a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
It was Campozano who was looking more offensive and likely to break in the early stages of the match. However, the Argentine converted two of six break points, and after
a few tense exchanges, he managed to blow his opponent away with a 6-2 score in the opening set.
Dabul was fortunate enough to get to two successive break points, but there should be no doubts that he elevated the level of play when it mattered most.
Although the Argentine player suffered a lapse in concentration at the start of the second set, going down 4-5, he rejuvenated his passion for the victory which was considerably
lacking in Campozano’s game.
The Argentine tolerantly waited for his chances, and grabbed the break at 5-5, and subsequently, served out with relevant ease.
After squandering a couple of break point opportunities in the second set, Campozano looked out of steam and out of ideas as how to stop Dabul’s energetic charge towards
the finishing line.
Possessing the second set lead at 6-5, Dabul started to loosen up, taking his attacking brand of tennis to Campozano with great effect while the latter did not flash any
massive shots like the ones his fans had seen against Daniel Dutra Da Silva of Brazil but below average shots from the Ecuadorian, which were highly punished by the Argentinian with a lot of authority.
As a matter of fact, Campozano was actually not playing badly by any means but he could not match the fury, losing the second set with five games to seven.
The Argentine drew his second round match to a close, by scoring four aces while committing no double fault and in addition to this, he won 72 percent of points on service,
42 percent of points on return and a total of 74 of 133 points during the match.
A spot in the finals will be on line at Manta, Azerbaijan when Dabul and second-seeded Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Da Silva collide on Friday. The winner is set to go up against
either Italian Riccardo Ghedin or eighth-seeded Facundo Arguello of Argentina.
