Brian Elliott gets first shutout as St. Louis Blues win 3-0 over Tampa Bay Lightning -NHL Match Update

St. Louis goalie, Brian Elliott, earned his first shutout of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season by blocking all 19 Tampa Bay shots on his net, allowing the Blues to divert the Lightning, 3-0, Saturday night, November 12, 2011, at the
sold-out Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, United States.

The Blues not only earned their second shutout in three nights but also snapped Tampa Bay’s three game winning streak, of which two were in overtime and a shootout.

Elliott does not think that it was a win out of the blue, but rather something they worked hard for and ultimately earned.

"That was the complete game we've been wanting", Elliott said. "Everybody was hustling. Everybody was working hard. No one took a shift off".

Kris Russell scored his third of the season and first of the night with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period to put the St. Louis Blues ahead by one entering the second round.

Kevin Shattenkirk extended the lead with his goal with six seconds to go in the next 20 minute phase after the Blues failed to capitalise on two straight minor penalties giving them an added man advantage after Steven Stamkos and Dominic Moore were booked.

T.J. Oshie added another for St. Louis during the third period which gave them a commanding lead with less than 14 minutes to play in the final round of regulation. The Blues also managed to kill of three of their penalties, denying Tampa Bay any chance
at attempting to make a comeback.

Having everyone play in sync is something Blues head coach, Ken Hitchcock, stresses and having him above them, St. Louis is currently 2-0-1.

"The way you have to play against that system is the old way that you used to play in the 90's and 2000's when there was a lot of 1-4 (formations)", Hitchcock said. "But there isn't that much anymore. So your defensemen are really critical in moving their
feet. If they don't move their feet, there's a turnover. Every time we moved our feet, things were really good".

Lightning have one more game on the road against the Winnipeg Jets before returning home for the next three on Monday, while the Blues host the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
