Brian Herman breaks course and tournament record in Honda Classic – Golf News
The PGA Tour rookie, Brian Herman, astounded his opponents at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida after he fired a course and tournament record score of nine-under par 61, on Friday, March 2, 2012.
He started his campaign in Honda Classic at the 107th place after a first-round 73.
His brilliant score took him 102 spots ahead on the leaderboard, finishing tied for fifth along with his compatriots, Vaughn Taylor and Jimmy Walker.
He was just two strokes behind the leaders Tom Gillis and Justin Rose who finished at eight-under par overall score.
He kicked off his second round with back-to-back birdies on the first two holes, followed by a spectacular eagle on par-five third through a beautiful three-wood to 25 feet.
While reaching the par-four 12th, he was at seven-under and made his maiden bogey of the round after missing the par putt. That was the only shot that he missed throughout his round for the hole.
However, his consecutive three birdies starting from the 14th moved him into the top five while entering the final 36 holes of the tournament.
According to Herman, his performance came in the light of Sergio Garcia’s interview telecasted on television on Thursday night.
“He is always been one of my favourite players, just the way he goes out and has no fear,” Harman said.
He went on, “I said, 'You know what? Today I am not going to play scared anymore. I am going to go out and I am going to do the best I can. I am going to go at every flag, and if it works out great and if no, I will catch you all next week' ”.
One shot ahead of him was the world number two and US Champion, Rory McIlroy, who shot a three-under par 67 to finish tied for third with Dicky Pride.
McIlroy is looking for a victory in the tournament in order to reach atop the Official World Golf Ranking, replacing the current number one, Luke Donald.
Donald is not participating in the event, giving McIlroy a chance to become the best player in the world of golf for the first time in his career.
