Brian Matter wins the North Carolina Grand Prix - Race 1 2012 Elite Men category
Brian Matter of Team RACC p/b Geargrinder wins the first race of the North Carolina Grand Prix after his astonishing performance during the event.
The cyclist rode brilliantly throughout the race and outshined his major opponents during the Saturday’s contest.
The American completed the race in a total time of 58 minutes and 32 seconds occupying the top podium position and restricting Kerry Werner Jr. of Team BMC U23 Development Team and Dan Timmerman of Team Richard Sachs-RGM Watches-Radix for the second and the third positions respectively.
He was delighted after winning the race and stated that although the competition is not the same as USGP however, the tactical course made it pretty difficult to claim the top spot.
"This race is always tough. The competition isn't the same as a USGP but the way the course is laid out it makes for a lot of tactical racing,” Matter told Cyclingnews.
“It was a group of four guys going into the last lap and I prefer not to sprint because you never know what's going to happen”.
"I had to be careful where to put in my efforts. With a half a lap to go just before the pits there's a pavement section and I hit it pretty and opened up a 10-foot gap,” he concluded.
Brian stated that he had enough strength to launch the final attack and took full advantage of the gap during the final climb which was the main ingredient in his winning recipe.
Both, Werner and Timmerman also rode brilliantly but fell short of Matter by 5 and 16 seconds respectively.
Werner stated that he spent too much strength at the climb and could not recover in time to bridge the gap which actually cost him the top podium spot.
Jacob Lasley of Team Soundpony, Chase Dickens of Team American Classic Pro Cyclocross Team and Adam Myerson of Team SmartStop/Mountain Khakis occupied the fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.
Robert Marion of Team American Classic Pro Cyclocross, Andrew Dillman of Team Bob's Red Mill Cyclocross, Mitchell Kersting of Team Bob's Red Mill Cyclocross, Jake Wells of Team No Tubes Elite Cross, Greg Wittwer of Team Bob's Red Mill Cyclocross and Brian Sheedy of Team Giant Bicycles/Brevard College claimed the next six positions after the North Carolina Grand Prix-Race 1 2012.
