Brian McCann misses the line-up as substitute catcher David Ross takes his place - MLB Update
Catcher Brian McCann is passing through a lean period at the moment. Unable to strike hits the way he has been doing since start of the season, he failed in most of the games played in the last week or so. Meanwhile, his occasional absence from the line-up
is creating opportunities for substitute catcher David Ross.
Interestingly enough, Ross is making the most of them. Two games which featured him in the line-up had reasonable contribution coming off from Ross as regard to making hits. For a while, he did not let the manager feel the need for having McCann back.
McCann stands for an important role in the offence. His recent slump apart, on a number of occasions he made impressive displays on the plate. In particular, the way he struck homers and played part in one of the highest scoring games the Braves had in the
season, the club cannot afford for him to stay out for a longer time period.
Meanwhile, manager Fredi Gonzalez has an explanation about McCann. For him, their catcher will be back soon. He is confident that McCann will not miss any game now before the All-Star Game.
When one looks at Brian’s performance thus far, the fact he has been inconsistent comes out. Only if he was able to show power on a regular basis as opposed to its occasional displays, he may have been one of the All-Stars.
In some of the games, he was impeccable in making hits. It made him among the few catchers present in the world of baseball who can be so prolific on the plate.
However, with regard to making plays, he was subpar. It is the only area he has struggled to achieve a level which one can expect from a player at the Major League level.
The fact Ross has performed the role in absence of Brian reasonably well proves that the Braves possess a strong back-up. Therefore, in case Brian cannot comeback anytime soon, things will be in control.
Ideally, Atlanta will want McCann to return as soon as possible in a top-notch form and keep them in contention for a potential play-off spot by the dint of his slugging mastery.
