Brian O’Driscoll upset with loss – Rugby News Update
Brian O’Driscoll, the 33-year-old Ireland captain, was left to rue the disappointing defeat against New Zealand in the third and final test at Hamilton.
Ireland went into the game with confidence having run the home team close in the second test. They were hoping for another close game but at the end they got a 60 – 0 trashing by the All Blacks.
O'Driscoll told Sky Sports, "That scoreline is a bit embarrassing. They were very, very clinical at the breakdown today and we were terrible. That combination resulted in 60 points.”
The All Blacks started the game positively, scoring their first points via Sam Cane through a try, with Aaron Cruden scoring the subsequent conversion. By the 12th minute they were down by 14, as the All Blacks scored another try though Williams
with Cruden converting. It got worse for the visitors before half time as two more tries, conversions, and a penalty goal left the score at a dismal 29 – 0.
Ireland was not able to stem the flow of tries after the break, with Cane scoring his second try of the match in the 43rd minute and on the 49th minute Gear scored one to give New Zealand a 41-point lead. It was game over for the Irish,
but there was more misery to come, as the All Blacks ran riot over the visiting team. Thomson scored the last try on 72 minutes, with Barrett converting to leave the score 60 – 0.
Declan Kidney, the head coach of Ireland also rued the early mistakes, saying that they never recovered from the early setbacks.
"We let them play well," he said. "We made turnovers early on, especially in the first quarter, and once New Zealand get ahead of you like that, it gives them free will to play the way they played for the next 60 minutes.”
"We were just a bit too tense today at the breakdown, they won all the collisions. It's quite a simple game, if you're losing the collisions you're going to lose the game."
Ireland will be happy that the tour is over, after the All Blacks defeated them convincingly.
