Brian Roberts’ potential hip surgery could end his 2012-season playing hopes – MLB News
Baltimore Orioles’ veteran second baseman Brian Roberts faces some serious trouble at the moment as now his huge expectations to return into 2012 Major League competition is looking quite uncertain with his potential hip surgery.
He was currently on rehab assignment in the Minor League with short-season Class-A Aberdeen due to an earlier torn labrum in his right hip.
However, now team management and his personal trainers have advised him to look other options as well for a long term solution for his torn labrum.
He was already on the Orioles’ disabled list and now this potential surgery will further extent his period on DL.
“It just hasn't responded the way we were hoping it would, We kind of knew this was a possibility going into it, but we wanted to give it the best possible shot we could to get back out there and try and help for the last two months of the season. But it's
not going to put me in a position to play the way I want to play and the way that I think it's necessary to help,” Roberts said.
He added, “I might be able to get out there and battle through 100 at-bats this next month or two of the season.”
Since coming into the season, Roberts struggled with his hip soreness which later increased in the middle of the season and the team management had to place him on disabled list.
His hip surgery which will take approximately six to seven months to heal fully also makes his return into the Major League quite uncertain especially in this ongoing MLB season.
Recently, the Baltimore team sources have stated in the media that Roberts, whose surgery is the utmost priority at the moment, will be a key end to their next season’s potential preparations.
Some sources have also reported in the media that Roberts’ surgery has not been finalised yet but there is quite a possibility that it will be performed within eight to ten days by a renowned hip specialist Dr. Marc Philippon in Vail, Colorado.
Two-time All Star and American League Player of the Month in 2005, Roberts has played his entire career in the Orioles’ franchise.
His career no doubt has produced some memorable plays for the Orioles, but at the same time, Roberts’ has been injured on quite consistent bases. In 2009, with multiple concussions, he was out from the baseball field for quite some time.
In the meanwhile, despite he has been injured with so many concussions and multiple injuries in the past as well, his level of performance never showed any bad signs about his future. His career hitting average of .280 still makes him one of the best second
basemen in the league.
