Brian Soutar defeats Brandon Stone in the final of Sanlam South African Amateur
Brian Soutar of Scotland won the title in the Sanlam South African Amateur, by defeating the South African Brandon Stone, in the final round on March 2.
The sensational event of the South African Golf Association came to an end at the Mowbray Golf Course. Soutar made amazing strokes in the second round and finished on the top.
He scored eight times better than Stone, whereas Stone only scored six times, hence Soutar won the title by 2 & 1 scores.
This was the second consecutive year that the winner is from Scotland. Last year, it was Scottish Michael Stewart, who recorded a victory at the Sanlam South African Amateur.
Soutar, the 27-year-old amateur, is happy to see his name on top of the leaderboard. He also enjoyed the victory, as he managed to bring the trophy back to Scotland.
“It is such an honour for me to lift this trophy,” Soutar said. “At the start of the week I said that I rated this tournament as high as the Scottish Amateur. To be honest, when Michael won last year, I figured it must have been easy”.
He continued, “I didn’t believe the team when they told us how tough the South Africans are to beat. I was very, very wrong. The standard of golf this country is incredibly high and the talent and depth of the players is world class”.
Another good factor for Soutar was to defeat the South Africa's No.1 amateur player, Stone. A tough and competitive battle was seen in both rounds of the finals.
“To go all the way to the final, to face the country’s No 1 and to win is a dream come true,” Soutar added.
Both the rounds were played on Friday, March 2, where both the finalists were tied in the first round and their scores were equal.
The four-time winner Soutar scored better. Similarly, Stone matched his scores in the first round. They amazed the spectators by their performances and increased the interest levels to some extent as well.
Then in the second round, Soutar started the day impressively. He recorded two birdies on the 2nd and the 7th holes, whereas Stone carded a bogey on the 2nd and a par on the 7th.
Two strokes helped Soutar take a lead over the South African.
