Brian Vandborg is hopeful to secure the World Tour spot for the 2012 season
Brian Vandborg is still struggling to find his future home for the season ahead. It was believed that he might adjust for the Professional Continental team Christina Watches-Onfone but the Dane has rejected the notion of signing any side at a lower level.
The cyclist started riding professionally with Team CSC back in 2004 and stayed with the team for a period of three years.
He accepted an offer for Discovery Channel Team in 2007 before joining Team GLS for two seasons, 2008 and 2009.
Brian penned a two-year deal with the Italian Team Liquigas in 2009 and was approached by Bjarne Riis to represent his team for the 2011 season.
Vandborg rode for the Danish side, Team Saxo Bank-SunGard throughout the season and his main job was to help the team leader at the major cycling events of the year.
Brian’s career highlights include the stage victories at the Tour de I’Ain 2005 and the Tour of Georgia 2005.
He also claimed the Danish Time Trial Championships in 2006 and secured the second position during the 2005 and 2006 versions of the race.
Presently, the cyclist is desperately looking for a World Tour team for the 2012 season.
"Sometimes it's hard to maintain patience, but I try to keep my spirits up, it doesn't help to just sit at home and sulk, so I train diligently and I am also in good shape," he told Ekstrabladet.dk.
Brian believes that the global financial crisis is the main reason behind his struggle to continue at the top level of the sport.
A number of World Tour teams disbanded by the end of the 2011 season, which resulted in very limited opportunities for all the cyclists.
The Dane briefed, "I still believe that there are possibilities. I have some openings all around, but it's bad times for the sport where the money is not what it was".
Brian is currently linked with the Continental side, Team Christina Watches-Onfone. The team is built around Michael Rasmussen and is looking good to lead the UCI Continental Circuits for the 2012 season.
Vandborg rode the Tour de France for three consecutive seasons and is finding it difficult to adjust at a lower level of cycling.
It will be interesting to see if Brian succeeds in securing a spot in a World Tour team for the 2012 season.
