  1. Ouch... does it really need to be flush mount?  There's no going back from this, once the brick has been removed... a surface mount tho, can always be moved, changed, etc.  A 'decorative' mounting frame could even be used.

However, if you're set on digging in to the brickwork....

Your choice of tools range from hammer and chold chisel, to a tile/masonry saw blade, to a rotary tool with a ceramic, or diamond bit.  An impact hammer might also do the trick.

You might be able to use the tile saw (with a graphite, or diamond blade), to score lines into the area you want to install the plaque.  Place them nor more than 1/4" apart... I'd move them closer together myself.  This will help give you a 'reference' line too, as to the depth of cut, you need, even in the middle of the area.  Then I'd use either an impact hammer, or rotary tool, to remove the remainder of the brick/mortar.

Naturally, you'll want to wear safety gear.... glasses, gloves, hearing protection... maybe even a face gaurd, and something around your neck, to protect yourself.

This will be a slow process.... hehehe.

    Have Fun
