I am looking for a new bridle for my horse.

Can anyone recommend me a brand of bridle? Past experience with them? Which ones to avoid?

(English bridle)

THanks x

  1. Depends on what your horse needs.  You really put the bridle together so you have to decide what kind of bits you need.  If you say English, I'm assuming you are talking about a bridle that has a snaffle and curb bit.  Do you need a smooth snaffle or twisted wire?  How is the horse's mouth.  As far as the curb, how high do you need the port and how long does the shank need to be.  This is dependent on where your horse puts its nose.

  2. From what I know, it all depends on what your horse needs. All horses are different, and need different types of saddles, bridles, etc. You may have to try a few bridles out before you can decide which is best for your hrose.

  3. If its an english bridle, then makesure you get the best quality tack that you can. 'jeffries' is a good make, but very expensive. For a cob sized bridle, expect to be paying £50 for a good quality snaffle bridle.

  4. Do you mean a bridle or a bit? Or both?  Any headstall and reins that are well made, preferably made in England, Germany, or France, (made with leather FROM England, Germany or France - or Switzerland) should do.  Or American, if you can find it.  Don't buy anything made in or with leather from South America or India.  Very bad leather, badly tanned, cracks and breaks easily.

As for a bit, well that generally depends, but as a rule I always start horses in either a single-jointed or french link snaffle, again, well made, only.  Check for smoothness, and stainless steel or copper overlay.  I like Korsteel.  I use either full cheek or D, but occasionally use a loose ring.  You'll have to see which your horse prefers, in terms of metal and rings.

You're really best off paying a bit more for good quality when it comes to tack, and if you take care of it, it will last for years and years.

Hope that's the kind of info you're looking for.
