Solar power generally works in to ways: thermal and photovoltaic.  

Thermal solar uses the sun to heat water.  Solar panels are used to absorb the sun's heat and transfer it to water.  The water can then be used to warm a building, a swimming pool etc.  

Photovoltaic solar converts the suns energy directly into electricity.  In this case the solar panel absorbs the sun's light rather than heat.  The sun's light excites electrons in the photovoltaic cells producing electricity.
