Question:

Bright orange, slow moving lights in the sky last night....what could it be?

I was out last night with friends and we noticed several bright orange, slow moving lights in the sky. There were maybe 10 - 15 of them in total, some moving slightly faster than others and all moving upwards. Some faded and when they did they would start falling downwards. They didn't seem to have any formation to them and were all moving individually. This went on for about an hour in total and then they just stopped.

We tried figuring out what it might have been, some people suggesting fireworks (they were too slow to be fireworks) and someone else said something from an air show, but not only did it not look like anything like that but this was about 11pm so it was a bit late for anything like that.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this might have been or has anyone seen anything like this themselves?

I live in the south of England if that helps at all.

Thanks for your answers.

  1. If you were in south-central Arizona, this would be an easy question.  They frequently do night bombing practice over a bombing range southwest of Phoenix, and to illuminate it they drop two to six long lasting yellow or orange flares with parachutes.  They hang for a long time and are visible for great distances.  They eventually die out on their own, but sometimes they disappear behind a mountain range which is not itself visible at night, causing them to appear to go out suddenly and nearly simultaneously.
