Bright red light in the sky ( in sydney)?

i just saw a bright red light in the sky over sydney. it was dimming, wasnt moving and it was same size as a star.

what was it? cause it has gone now.

I can think of two possibilities - either a planet OR a satellite.

Could've been Mars.

Isn't it called the red planet? could be wrong.

The dimming may have been a thin cloud or smog.

I have no idea I'm in Sydney too and I did not see it do you think it might be a plane?
