This is a great freeware starchart program you can download.  If you tell it where you are it will tell you what you see.  If you are in the northern hemisphere and you are talking about after 11:00pm. then you are probably talking about Jupiter.  I hope you enjoy the star chart.  It will help you to answer many questions.

Right now, the brightest object in the sky, second to the moon of course, is jupiter which looks like a star. i think your looking at jupiter right now because currently, it is the brightest object in the night sky. except for the moon, of course.

the moon, when it is out, is always the brightest object. ususally the next object is venus, but venus is too close to the sun to be seen. mars and saturn set too early for them to really stand out. they set close to midnight, but jupiter stays out until the early morning.

remember, to the naked eye, stars often look like planet. the difference is, planets are usually brighter, and appear to be more of a disk than a dot.
