Brindisi Breeze’s untimely death in a freak accident leaves connections devastated
Brindisi Breeze, winner of the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (Registered As The Spa Novices' Hurdle Race) in the Cheltenham Festival met a tragic fate when he was killed in an accident on 19th May, 2012.
The six-year-old bay gelding demonstrated exquisite talent in the festival, as he defeated race favourite, Boston Bob, by 2 lengths for trainer, Lucinda Russell, where he was mounted by jockey, Campbell Gillies.
It was a freak accident that took his life, as the trainer explained to the press:
“Brindisi Breeze was tragically killed last night. At 2.30am he jumped out of his paddock and was hit by a tanker. He died instantly.”
The owner, Sandy Seymour, was also grieved over the death of the bay gelding as she stated to the press that:
"To go from the pride of standing at Cheltenham watching Brindisi and Campbell stride up the hill to victory to the devastation of today's bizarre incident leaves me deeply saddened. With the love and the care that is given to these wonderful athletes,
to lose any of them is difficult, but when it is a horse who has achieved so much in his short life it is deeply upsetting. It will be hard to overcome.”
The son of King´s Theatre, out of Miss Poutine, had a successful career, and it seemed that he was lining up more victories after his success at Cheltenham.
Over the course of his career, he competed in seven starts and scored five times, a brilliant record which will sadly remain at a standstill.
This season, the Sandy Seymour owned runner completed a well-deserved hat-trick under rider Campbell Gillies.
On 26th January, 2012, he competed in the Blue Square Novices' Hurdle (Qualifier) at Newcastle and notched a grand victory, where he won by a tremendous margin of 13 lengths.
He carried the same momentum into the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle (Registered As The Prestige Novices' Hurdle Race) where he defeated, Harry Topper.
Whelped on 18th April, 2006, the jumper faced an ill-fate, which left his connections devastated over his death.
