Bringing cigarettes back from Costa Rica?

i am going to costa rica in a few weeks.

i know that cigerretes are cheaper there. is it legal to being then back to the us? i think it is but you can only bring back like a carton! if i just brought back a carton and put it in my checked luggage would that be ok or would i have to bring the carton with me in my carry on!

  2. Yes, it's legal to bring back up to 200 cigarettes duty free. If you have more than that, they will be confiscated. (see the section Tobacco products on the government website: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacati... ) - you won't have the option of paying additional taxes and keeping them. You can put the cigarettes in either your checked luggage or your carry on.
