Bringing cigars from mexico to us?

I might be going to Mexico soon and was wondering what the us customs laws were on bringing cigars from mexico back over. I am not talking about cubans, just mexican cigars.

As long as they aren't Cubans you should have no problem. I think your allowed to bring back a large amount so no worries there either. Just make sure you pack them safe so you wont damage them. If they are not in a box I suggest investing in a travel humidor. Before you leave go to a local cigar shop and inquire about one they come in all sizes and are best for traveling. The US duty free limit on cigars is 100 cigars up to $800 in value every 30 days (excluding any cigars made in Cuba)

The people who sell these products will tell you that you can take back more, and just pay the duty, or just remove the bands and take Cuban cigars across the border.  There are even some sellers in Mexico who will offer to sell you Cuban cigars, remove the bands, give you a receipt for Mexican segundos (or factory seconds) and then mail you the bands at your home address.  These Cuban cigars are often counterfit from such brokers.

I recently was on a cruise where the duty free store told me the law in the US on Alcohol had changed, and you could take extra as long as you paid the duty.  This was even supported by other people in authority on the cruise staff.  This information was given to multiple people, and they were told an unlimited amount could be purchased in Mexico and brought to the US as long as the duty is paid.

This was later found not to be the case, as several passengers found upon arriving at the US Customs and Border Protection Service Check Point.  It is the policy for them to allow the allowable amount through and to confiscate and destroy any excess alcohol or tobacco.

I personally discussed this with US Customs yesterday as I own a travel agency and had several passengers on a cruise which arrived yesterday from Mexico and 75 people who left yesterday for Mexico.

Most countries have restrictions on how much tobacco and alcohol you are allowed to bring back.  The duty you pay on any extra usually makes the product cost more than its worth.  Your tourist visa will state how much you are allowed to bring back.

here are the allowed items for you:

Tobacco:1000 cigarettes, a reasonable amount of tobacco and 100 cigars

Alcohol: 1 US quart.

it's the US customs requirements.

So the answer to your question is...tada...no problem taking back cigars.

If you want to take back Cuban cigars just remove the band that identifies it as Cuban.
