I live in the USA and am purchasing furniture from Ikea in Canada. The furniture totals about $800 I was wondering what to expect on the way back over. Are there fees? How much are they? Thanks in advance for the help!

  1. If you stay in Canada less than 48 hours, your customs allowance is only $200 per person.  If you go for at least 48 hours you can bring back $800 worth of goods, which will work well, as long as they are for personal or household use (furniture would qualify, I think).

If you are going with a family member or members you can combine your allowances, so if you go with a spouse, you can bring back up to $1600.  But you must be in Canada for 48 hours.

Here's the Customs Department (of the US) website on this.
