Question:

Bringing home a hamster today?

Okay, so I'm finally getting a hamster today! I'm so excited!

I know you have to leave him/her alone for two days, at least, to get used to their new home. I'm leaving tomorrow morning and will be back Sunday night. Is it okay to leave my hamster at home? I will make sure he/she has plenty of food and water, so that isn't an issue.

Thanks!

  1. Put it in a pet carrier and bring food for the little guy, make sure you bring bedding and make sure it is a good sized cage.  :)

  2. That's fine.

To be on the safe side I would actually get two water bottles as well as a big food bowl because hamsters need lots of water and it's best to keep them filled to the top at all times, but it will be okay for two days.  However, you don't have to get two bottles. The only downside is that when you come home you still can not hold you hamster, because it will have no idea who the heck you are! When you come home, give it food and water to let it get used to your hand, let it sniff you, and feed it a carrot or nut, etc. from your hand. Then while it's eating, sit near the cage and talk. This way it will get used to your voice and your appearance. Then the next day you can hold it. If it bites you, put it back without any punishment!  However, if it's just a nibble, keep holding it because it may have thought you were food, but learned otherwise. Hold it everyday from then on and you'll have a happy hamster!

  3. Hi your hamster should be fine for 2 days leave plenty of food and water for your hammy and make sure they can get to it.

having a hamster for the first time you need the toys the wheel and treats to give them and plenty of bedding for them to sleep in, however hamsters are nocturnal animals and are awake at night to there will be allot of activity to put up with at night, also chewing the bars of its cage at all hours of the night (trust me I know what your in for)

make sure they have something to gnaw on for there teeth,

    they also like cardboard tunnels.

you might also find one night when your asleep that your hamster might have managed to escape, found on of mine in the coat cupboard lol.

this might be allot to think about but be prepared for some nosey nights ahead, above all that hamsters have grate little characters and the more you play with them the more tame they will become.

good luck with your new hammy. :)

just to let u no i didnt no that you have to leave him/her alone for two days...i played with him for the 2 days i got him...and much, much, much, longer

  6. yes that will be fine and it will also get used to the new home with no desterbences i think it a good idea just make sur it hve plenty of food and water and an excersize wheel to run on or they get very bored

  7. the first day i got my hammy i went away for almost 5 days and when i came back my hammy still had a ton of food and the water level was fine. u can leave a hamster alone 4 up 2 a week

  8. Congragulations on your new hamster!

And no problem at all, as long as the hamster has a comfy cage (of course a cage with no escape routes for the hamster), plenty of food and water, it should have no problems with being home alone for two days. An added advantage is that your hamster being new, will get time to get used to its surroundings peacefully without any intrusions during the two days you are away.

  10. YAY! Im geting a hamster next thursday for my B-day too!! (I am 99% sure). Congrats!! It will be okay if you leave him for a day. Just make sure he is clean has water and food. YAAYY!!

  11. Congratulations on getting your first hamster!

Yes it's fine to leave for a few days. Just make sure that it has plenty of food (keep in mind hamsters are extremely picky eaters and won't eat the things they don't like even when starving) and it might be a good idea to have someone change the water while you're gone. It's fine to do this, just be as quiet as possible and keep your hand as far away as you can from Hammy. You may also want to let it adjust for about four days instead of two. It makes them happy campers by the time you stick your hand in to hold it for the first time.

    Good luck!

That's actually is kind of ironic that you're leaving the day after you get your hamster.

Also, it's usually very obvious if a hamster is a boy or girl. Boys are very boyish and you can't see much on a girl.

  12. Sunday? ok todays like friday or something.... yeah he should be fine.  just fill his water bottle up RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO!!!  (this helps it be as fresh as psossible)  and you  mind as well throw a little extra food in there.  But otherwise he'll be fine.  Pick out a healthy hamster, and I hope you you have fun!

  13. Yep, it's OK to leave him as long as he has ample food and water. I agree about the double water bottle thing, or if you can't get another just leave him a dish of water (make sure it's heavy so he can't tip it).

One thing I want to add, though, is to make sure not to just start playing with him right when you get home, too. You should start slow, still, and sit by the cage for another day and just talk, let him sniff the back of your hand, things like that, to get him used to YOU. ;P

Good luck with your new hammie! I'm sure you two will have a lot of fun.

  14. ur LEAVING??? why? is tht supposed 2 help? just make sure some1 is there 2 check in on him/her every once in a while. i dont knw if leaving is a good idea though!

  15. I never heard of leaving them completly alone.  But I understand not moving the cage and being extra quiet when checking it.
