ok so i have a cat of my own already.. shes spayed and a little over a year old and i adopted her when she was a few months old.

im adopting my boyfriend's cat soon because he lives in boston for rite now and his cat stays locked away in the guest bedroom of his mom's house. my heart goes out to otis [the cat] because ive known him since he was a kitten and i cant stand to see him confined like that so im taking him in haha

he is nuetered maybe a little over 2 years old and has a very even temperment. hes a good cat :]

my kitty is nice but can be irritable at times but not too much. overall id say shes a pretty good cat as well.

my question is when i finally get my boyfriend's cat, how should i prepare for the two cats to meet and be in the same house together? should i put one in another room for a bit while the other walks free? helppp! hahaha

thanks. :]

  1. the kitten Will most likely irritate the older cat but will eventually get used to him, you should also keep in mind that moving for a cat is extremely stress full. I would let the older cat get used to its new surroundings first before introducing the them together. I know this from experience, ive don't this 2 times.

  2. The new one goes into a room with a door that can be closed and let the resident cat sniff him under the doorway.  Keep them separated for 2-3 days, then put your cat into a room with a closed door and let the other one out to check things out. Put him back into his room when he's done and let her out so she can check out his scent around the place.

On the 4th day, just open his door and go get the broom JUST IN CASE. If yours objects to him enough to want to start a fight, put the brush end of the broom between them to break the eye contact, which will let the defensive one get away. Keep them separated for another two or three days if this happens.

Be near them for that first two or three hours, just in case, but usually things work out ok.

Watch for screaming, which is the start of an attack.  Break it up at arm's length with the broom or pillows, to avoid getting bitten if they are seriously ready to go at it.

But usually things don't escelate to that point.

  3. What I would do is put both of the cats in the same room and be with them to make sure the don't fight and scratch each other.

So that's what I would do and it keeps them safe.

And if this doesn't work, try talking to both of them quietly and holding one in your arms for their safety and explaining to them that they will be family now and friends too(I know it sounds kind of crazy, but hey, it worked for me and my cousins.)

Just be patient with them too.

Hope this answers what you were looking for:)

  4. The best way i found was if your cat is sleeping (say in your room) let the other cat loose to investigate the new environment & new smells,  also make sure it sees where the cat box is. The cat may cry out which will alert your cat (make sure you have a squirt bottle filled with water in case any problem arise) I will tell you right now there will more than likely a whole lot of meowing (not the friendly kind) and alot of hissing & spitting, with an occasional fight. (hence the water bottle) Don't be alarmed this is quite normal & just for your knowledge it may go on for a week or two. They will eventually get along. Make sure you give your kitty its own special time. Good Luck to you all.

  5. Hudson's right (that's the second time tonight I've had to say that!).  Bring the new one home and keep him in the bathroom or a bedroom with the door closed and do the other stuff he says.

Good for you for saving the cat from a one-room existence!

  6. theyll get used to eachother after a while.

i brought a 6 month in with 3 year old cats (i thinlk thats how old they were then) and now theyre best buddies. (:

it took a little bit of time, but theyre fine.

keep an eye on them though. make sure they play nice.
