Question:

Bringing somebody with you the 1st day College ?

I was just wondering if it is okay to bring someone (not registered in the class) with you to your 1st day at university?

Just wondering because my sister is dying to go with me. She is going to beauty school and will never experience a university class. The only time she can go is my 1st day of university (tomorrow).

I did bring someone once before to my community college class and was fine. Is University different? There is 80 people in my class, are they really going to take attendance the 1st day?

Thanks for helping me with this!

  1. You say she can go on the first day, then there you have it.  BTW: You may or may not what the extra "help" of having your sister there.  It may be a hectic day!

All instructors are different.  Some don't care if you show up but you better get your homework in....

  2. Definitely depends on the school. She needs to bring ID..

I went to my cousin's college (Temple), and honestly the teacher's seemed absolutely fine with it. I went to a lecture and to a class with less than 20 students. I honestly don't think that there would be a problem, especially in lectures. The first day may be weird though. Don't they hand out a bunch of stuff? I think you'd be better off letting her go in a week or so.. until you (and your classmates) are better acclimated.

  3. I really don't think that's a good idea. The first day of classes is going to be chaotic enough.

Yes, they will usually take attendance and if there are people on a waitlist to get into that class and seating is limited, your professor may not take too kindly to your sister tagging along.

If you really want her to go with you, I would suggest getting in touch with the professor teaching that class and asking them first if it's alright that you bring her along. I've had professors who could care less and others who would not only make the "tag along" person leave, but the person who brought them got flack for bringing them along.

Get permission beforehand. That would be my suggestion.

  4. This is not a good idea.

Professors are paid to teach, there are no free lectures.  Attending a course without advance approval from the professor may be fine at some schools, but at other schools, it's considered the equivalent of sneaking into a theater without paying for a ticket--it's disrespectful, it's theft, and it's trespassing.  If you get approval from the professor, then by all means, bring her.  If not, you could get yourself--and your sister--into some serious trouble.  The best thing to do would probably be to look up the professor's contact information on the university website and either send an email or call his/her office.
