I just bought a cockatiel yesterday! They told me its to little to tell if its a male or female and that id have to get a blood test to tell! So, I'm not sure what s*x it was. I named it Yogi though! But, anyways. Its hanging up in my dining room/living room. and granted we're always in there.. Sometimes we're in our bedroom on the computer or watching tv... Yogi doesn't come out of his cage yet.. its too early. But, I was wondering if I should bring him into the bedroom with us or just go and see Yogi every hour for ten Min's or so.

AND if anyone knows any clues that I could TRY and figure out the s*x of Yogi- let me know! Thanks!

  1. if he doesnt get out of the cage then just take it to your bedroom (and make sure it doesnt p**p if it gets out of the cage!!)...and i think you should just do the blood test....only if you dont wanna find out what  gender it is!!....annd...u can't ask it when it starts to talk because youre the one who would teach it what to sayy..and i dont think it would know what youre talkin about when you ask it 'what gender are you?' ..so yea..i think you should do the blood test!!

  2. you have to wait a little bit until its grown up and then ask if its male or female :)

  3. avianbiotec are good if its a parrot i just got mine tested but iv got two cockatiels & i didnt need to get these tested as  i was told they are boys but you can't tell until they are a bit older. do a search on the internet to see how to tell the difference there alot of sites that tell you these things

  4. the color of his cheeks will tell you usually but not 100% method as to taking him out start now if you want him tame how old is he check  on weaning some breeders let go to early

  5. Let it settle in for a day or two, keep it quiet and just see it in the morning/daytime, the cage should be covered up during the night.   Then then bring it out of the cage as often as you can.  Don't forget to keep its one wing clipped, this not only prevents it from flying away but protects it from injuring itself.  ( beware of hot water in the sink also). Keep fans, stoves and heaters off and windows shut when it's out of the cage. Also buy an 'out of the cage' bird gym. for more info. regarding s*x of bird etc. go to letstalkbirds.com/cockatiels (chose cockatiels information link).

  6. Do not move it's cage around.  It will cause undue stress to have it's safehaven moved around continuously.  You didn't really state it's age, but you can slowly start handling it and working with it, just ensure that you do not let him ever be above eye level, as they determin superiority by hight and placing them above eye level (sitting on your head or shoulders) allows them to beleive they are in charge of you and will cause them to develop agressive habbits.  The person that said make sure it doesn't p**p is evidentally not an experienced handler.  If you remove them from their cage, it will happen.  With a bit of training, you can teach it to do so on command but until then, you will just have to arm yourself with some paper towel and mild cleaner

It should be okay in its cage in an area that is often frequented as long as he has toys, food and water.

DNA tests are the only way in which you can ensure the gender of your bird 100%.  Sexing them when they have their adult plummage depends on what type of cockatiel you have.  When you take him/her for their first avian vet check up, ask them to do the test.  It is only about 15-20 dollars extra.
