Brisa Silva drops 21 as Mexico rout Paraguay 87-44: FIBA Americas C’Ship for Women
Brisa Silva pounded a game-high 21 points as Mexico crushed Paraguay 87-44 on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the FIBA Americas Women's Basketball Championship. With the win, Mexico managed to overcome their losing streak in
the tournament and won their first game in the last attempt.
"We are satisfied with the result that we have at the end, the point spread and the location in the group, today we saw the Mexico that we should have seen from the beginning," said Coach Ray Santana of the Mexican National Team.
Silva was all over the court on the night. She stole the ball four times in her 31 minutes of action and scored all her point from the three point range on a 7 for 19 shooting from the field.
Erika Gomez also registered a double-double with a game high 12 rebounds and 19 points. The 35-year-old power forward shot 7 for 14 from the floor and 5 for 8 from free throw line. Abril Garcia of Adelitas also recorded a double-double
in the victory, punctuating 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while Alexis Castro posted 10 points, pinning 6 of 7 free throws, and also pulled down nine boards for Mexico.
Paraguay were led by shooting guard Tamara Insfran with 12 points and eight rebounds. Johanna Ghiringhelli Parez chipped in with 11 points, four assists and four rebounds while Lida Noemi Fernandez Sanchez grabbed 10 rebounds in
the loss.
Mexico shot only 37.7 percent from the field and 75 percent from free throw line. However, the Paraguayans stooped even lower to 20.8 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the stripe.
They opened the first quarter on a 4-0 run, but the Mexicans, after a cold start, knocked down 16 consecutive points in the last six minutes of the quarter to carry a 16-4 lead into the second.
Mexico continued to toy with Paraguay’s defence in the second quarter and pushed their lead to as many as 29 at 40-11, with 01:29 to go in the first half. Paraguay however scored the last six points of the period and trimmed their
deficit to 40-17 at halftime.
Trailing by 23 points at the end of first half, the Paraguayans did not get any closer than 21 points in the second half as Mexico ended the tournament on a high.
