Brisbane International’s organizers confident of Serena Williams’ participation – Tennis News
Another setback for the former world number one, Serena Williams, came to public as she went through yet another toe surgery this week. The reigning world number three will surely need some time to recover from the surgery but
the organizers of Brisbane International are confident that the American powerhouse will be fit to take part in the season-opening tournament scheduled to begin from 30th of December.
Williams’ doctor, Jeffrey Rockefeller, also stated that the surgery was a minor one and won’t take much time to heal. “Williams was treated for a chronic foot disorder which involved minor procedures on both of her great toes,”
said the Florida podiatrist. The 31-year-old has been suffering from chronic foot problems since she treaded on glass and badly cut both her feet in 2010. That unfortunate incident sidelined her for the bulk of the 2011 WTA season and she made her comeback
this year.
Merely nine days are left in the beginning of Brisbane International tournament and it might be a bit tough for Williams to be at her 100 per cent by then. However, taking her current form into consideration, the mighty American
still can beat anyone with even itching toes. Williams’ agent has assured Brisbane International officials that the WTA Player of the Year will “be fit and ready” for the season-opening event. She has merely withdrawn from Thailand exhibition event to take
some rest before launching her onslaught at the hard courts of Brisbane.
The third ranked superstar played her last match at the WTA Championships last month, defeating the world number two, Maria Sharapova, in the final of the season-ending grand finale. She was committed to play an exhibition event
in Thailand but had to pull out of it due to her foot surgery.
If Williams managed to play Brisbane International, she might not be fully fit and out of practice while competing against the world’s top ranked players. She is well known for making impactful comebacks after injuries and it might
not be any different this time round. However, Williams should not make a hasty decision that might put her Australian Open campaign in jeopardy.
