Question:

Brisbane OR Adelaide? Which city could be a better option?

I am trying to pursue my Masters in Business in JCU (James Cook - Brisbane) Or Ballarat in Adelaide along with my friend. Just seeking opinions from the existing Indians up there. Just worried about my part times, anyway that I can get into some sales or Call Center Jobs. I have about 2-3 years of work experience selling.

And we are 3 friends and are planning to share the rent. Is that possible? and any guesses about the rentals?

  1. Ballarat is not near Adelaide, it is in Victoria, closer to Melbourne. There will be work available in Ballarat and Townsville, but not call centre work. Work in cafes, shops etc.

It is certainly possible to share the rent, however rental properties are in short supply you might have some trouble finding one, particularly in Townsville. See www.domain.com.au or www.realestate.com.au for rental properties.

  2. To the people above, JCU does have a campus in Brisbane and it has been there for about 10 years. It is right in the CBD and in an excellent location.  (I googled it and the Univerisity of Ballarat has a campus in Adelaide, so our friend does know what he is talking about)

There are loads of call centre jobs in Brisbane both inbound calls centres and more sales/telemarketing jobs, so if you have experience you shouldn't have any problem getting a job.

Rent in Brisbane is probably more than what you would pay in Adelaide, sharing is definately the best option if you are a student.  Have a look at the rental section of www.realestate.com.au and check out suburbs like paddington, east brisbane, kelvin grove, red hill, toowoong, indooroopilly, st lucia. These suburbs are all close to the city and have lots of other students and young people living in share house accomodation. For a 3 bedroom house in one of these suburbs expect to pay $400+ per week.

  3. You have a bit of a geographical problem my friend. JCU is nowhere near Brisbane. It's about 1000km north of there in Townsville and Ballarat Uni isn't in Adelaide. It's in Victoria, a couple of hundred km from Melbourne.

There will be more sales (but not call centre) job opportunities in Townsville than in Ballarat as it's a larger city and Queensland is a more decentralised state. Better weather too. I went to school in Ballarat and it's one of the coldest and most miserable  places in Australia.

You should be able to get a house for $250 week or so and share the rental.

  4. Well as per the previous answers geographically you are way off  BUT... I have lived now in both and weather, lifestyle and work prospects look at Queensland. Ballarat or Adelaide are about the same , closed in, cold, wintery, dull, bland and down south where as Queensalnd is beautiful, sunny, rarely cold and wintery and just full of nice people. Mind you its getting expensive to live here now but its still worth it. So......Choose Queensland you can always go down south for a visit.

  5. James Cook University is in Townsville- not Brisbane. Townsville is more than 1000kms from Brisbane.

I think you need to look into this more.

It would be possible to get jobs and share a house in either Brisbane or Adelaide. Both are very live-able cities - Brisbane is better if you like a warmer climate.
