Question:

Brisket in a slow cooker?

I have a brisket that is about 2.5 lbs. I have always cooked brisket in the oven at a low temp. Can it be made in a slow cooker/ crock pot, and any recipe suggestions? Nothing with any dairy in it, please.

I'm not so fond of brisket and don't have a lot of time today, but the kosher butcher didn't have much that looked fresh and appealing when I went yesterday...

  1. I make this all the time.  Use the same spices/sauces/marinades as with any pot roast, but reduce the liquids a bit.

It helps to have something acidic, like tomato sauce in the recipe, as that will help tenderize the meat.

I usually put mine in on top of carrots, onions, celery and (optional - only if want to serve them) potatoes, and add onion soup mix and a quart of either tomato sauce or tomato juice.

  2. 6 hours at low would do it , fresh cracked pepper , onions , carrots , red cabbage  maybe potatoes .

  3. Yes, you can do that.  You could just roast the whole joint.  Or make a casserole with the cubed meat, a couple of cans of tomatoes, worcestershire sauce, garlic, onions, and a vegetable stock cube.

  4. The slow cooker is a great way to prepare your brisket. It will keep moist just like the low temp and long cooking time in the oven. What do you like with it? You're only limited by your imagination and dietary restrictions.
