  1. Once they get to about 5cm the males will start growing bristles. May take 6 months or so. It takes a couple of years for them to grow to full size, about 10cm for females, up to 15cm males.

  2. Males have bristles.

    Females do not.

  3. they get to be up to 5 inches in length

when to distinguish what gender they're

    pretty early actually

you should be able to distinguish that already at the size yours are

here are some pics for you to look at

the male will have bristles on his upper side of the mouth, pretty obvious

the female might still have some though, just not as long

  4. hello

A male bristlenose catfish can reach up to 15 cm in size while the female slightly smaller.

Well, Becky, how long it will take for them to reach their maximum size depends on many variables, like the species and also how well you look after the bristlenose catfish. The life span of a bristlenose catfish is usually around 8-25 years.

The brstlenose catfish's diet should be supplemented with vegetables such as cucumber, courgette(zucchini), lettuce, spinach, squash, boiled potato and shelled peas, along with sinking vegetable-based pellets, algae wafers and vegetable-based flakes. Bristlenoses also need to be able to chew at a piece of bogwood. High protein foods such as bloodworm, daphnia, mosquito larvae, peeled prawns or high protein sinking pellets may also be fed as a weekly treat. This should be done in order to keep them healthy.

Gender can be determined at roughly six months of age, and reach maturity at about eleven months. Females have short, thin, pointed barbels on the snout. Males have many longer, thicker barbels covering the snout.
