Bristol: Lifestyle on 30,000 pounds per year?

Hi all,

I am looking at moving to Bristol (from Australia) in a couple of months. I have been offered a job at Bristol University and would be on a salary of approx. 30,000 pounds.

Wondering if somebody could provide a quick insight into the cost of living in Bristol, and whether or not i'd be living comfortably on this kind of income. For instance, would a small one bedroom place close to the university (which i am told is in the good part of town) be within my reach? Or am i destined to wander down the sharehouse path again?

Generally after a quick insight into how comfortably (or otherwise) i'll be able to live in Bristol on this sort of income.

Thanks in advance

  1. Boy not a lot of ppl jumping on this one so I will give what little I know...I lived in Wells, 40 mins or so from Bristol.  30,000 would be a reasonable amount...not huge though and looking to live outside of Bristol may be your best bet.  Look at the Estate Agents web sites and get an idea of what is available to buy and to let.  If you travel the public system is great but slow.

Good luck.  I hope more answer you soon.

  2. You would have to pay about £450-£500 a month for a one-bedroomed flat near the Uni -try Sough Bristol - Southville - not too far from Uni and close to centre of Bristol and a lively place. Don't forget that on top of rent you will have to pay Community Charge, electricity, gas, water charges.  you should enjoy Bristol -great city.
