Britain’s Ellen Gandy needs to conquer her nerves for the 2011 Shanghai World Championships
Gold medallist for the 100m and 200m butterfly events at the 2011 British Gas Swimming Championships, Ellen Gandy needs to get hold of her nerves at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships. The gold medallist has her brain crowded by the moments of the disastrous
2009 World Championships, where she failed to make her way to the butterfly finals.
Gandy qualified for the Shanghai Championships after reaching the top of podium in butterfly events but she admits that bad memories have been rumbling her confidence. Despite of her dynamic timings at the butterfly events in Manchester, Gandy is facing
a double demon; her memories accompanied by the thought that she needs to keep Italian swimmers away to occupy the first spot on the podium.
Gandy proved that why she is the British champion when she won the two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She said, “In 2009 I wasn't ready to be ranked first in the world, but I think I have matured a lot more since
then and hopefully that will be reflected in how I swim in Shanghai.”
Gandy was unreachable in Manchester, keeping the Delhi butterfly champion, Fran Halsall, for the silver medal and world silver medallist, Jemma Lowe, for the bronze medal. The 19-year-old Gandy now resides in Australia but said that she is pleased with her
trip to Manchester and that she will return soon to prepare with Britain’s swimming team for the home Olympics. The London Olympics are only 500 days away and Gandy seems hopeful to qualify for the London Games in the big chair.
Gandy added, “When I am over in Australia there is not nearly as much hype but since I have come back I have really noticed all the excitement over here and I am definitely looking forward to it.” She uttered that the hype is not big in Australia as it is
not their home Olympics but this will help her in controlling her nerves.
