Britain’s Mo Farah Out of Commonwealth Games
Champion runner Mo Farah of Great Britain has announced that he will be taking a short break from running this year – subsequently missing out on the Commonwealth Games – due to fatigue. According to BBC Sport, a candid Farah stated that he needed to “take a break from training and racing,” and that “after the success I had this year I am happy to call it a season.”
Farah has enjoyed a paramount year, beating compatriot Chris Thompson to win gold at the 10,000m and 5,000m races at the European Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Later in May, the Somalian Briton crossed several other milestones, including the 10k British road record. In Zurich, Farah became Briton’s first runner to hit the 5,000m under 13 minutes at the Diamond League event, breaking the 28 year record previously held by England’s David Moorcroft.
“I had a great 2010 season,” Farah acknowledges. “I have been competing since the start of the year at cross-country, road and track and feel that I need a few weeks off now to let my body recover so that I can start winter training fit and healthy.”
Farah claimed to have experienced “a few niggles,” in the past month, but insists that it is “nothing serious.” Though dismayed not to compete in Delhi, Farah is confident that resting his body is a decision which will benefit him greatly in the long run.
“I look forward to the 2011 World Championships in Daegu and the 2012 Olympic Games in my home city of London. I came close to getting a medal in the past two World Championships and hope that I can continue to improve over the next few years.”
And indeed, the sprightly 27-year old shows promise of many more achievements to come.
