British Airway upgrade tips?

Question

I bought a ticket with American going to Johanasburg South Africa with a connection via London changing to BA. I have been able to upgrade from ORD to London but due to the fact that I have to change carriers to BA I cannot get the blanket upgrade throughout my itinerary. American upgrades won't transfer over...or so I'm told. My husband and I are platinum members on AA but don't have miles on BA. Does anyone know of anything we can do to upgrade on the last segment of our flight...its 10 hrs!!!! Thanks in advance for your advice!

Do you have an American Express card?  You could transfer your Membership Rewards points into Starpoints and then change all of the Starpoints into miles in a BA account and use those to upgrade =]  That's what I once did when I got stuck in a situation similar to yours.
