British Boxing Board of Control chief Robert Smith says David Haye will retire – Boxing news
Robert Smith, who is the chief of British Boxing Board of Control, has revealed that the former World Boxing Association world heavyweight champion, David Haye, has no plans to fight anymore.
The chief said that Haye called him up and informed him that he has made up his mind to walk away from the sport. Smith also stated that BBBC cannot go against Haye’s wish and if his boxing licence is not renewed, he will not be able to fight.
Smith told The Sun, “I received an email on Monday advising me Haye would not be carrying on. The board will discuss it on Wednesday but there is no way we could go against his wish not to renew his boxing licence. Without it, he can't fight.”
Haye’s manager and trainer, Adam Booth, on the similar note has also confirmed about his fighter’s retirement. Booth stated Vitali has still not come to the table and Haye is now about to make his final decision.
“It's one thing him saying he wants to fight David and another them actually offering something. The status quo is unchanged,” Booth told the Mirror. “Next Thursday is when David will make his decision. That's his birthday and he said he would retire
when he was 30.”
The Hayemaker, Haye, fought Wladimir Klitschko in a much-anticipated unification bout for the heavyweight titles on July 2, 2011 at the Hamburg’s Football Stadium in Germany. It was one of the biggest bouts in British history and Haye, who declared a lot
before the bout, lost it on a unanimous points’ decision on the fight night.
Since then Haye desperately wants a rematch with Wladimir but he has been turned down, as Vitali came up and showed interest in taking on the brash Londoner. Though there has not been any recent negotiations done between the two, let’s hope they somehow
sign a contract because there are still a lot out there who want to see Haye in action.
