British Championship Open: Paul Lawrie ends with a great start
The day 1 ends of the British Championship Open at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Course. The best in the world of golf are going head to head for one of the most prestigious and the oldest trophy of golf, the Claret Jug. The four-day event which started
from the 19th of July will end on the 22nd of July.
As day one came to an end, Paul Lawrie had a magnificent round one. He completed the par 70 course in just 65 shots.
Paul Lawrie had a decent start as he was able to card three consecutive birdies starting from the third hole. He scored a bogey on the eighth, which made his score two-under par after the front nine.
Lawrie’s back nine was better than his front nine. He was able to card three birdies on the last nine holes, on the fourteenth, fifteenth and eighteenth hole. There were no eagles, bogeys or double bogeys on his back nine. These made his score three-under
par on the back nine and his total score was five-under par.
Lawrie was just one stroke behind the leader, Adam Scott. Scott had a magnificent six-under par for the day. Lawrie was tied at the second position with Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts.
Lawrie was overall very happy with his performance of the first day. He had such a good start in a Championship after a long time.
In an interview after the first round, he said, “It was probably the strangest start of my career, the first six holes - I didn't really hit many good shots and I was three under. We get enough bad luck so it is nice when it goes your way. After that I hit
some really nice shots, played solid golf, and ended up with a good score”.
“I heard my name called a lot today, which down in England is a bit of a surprise. It's nice. It's the Open and everyone is here to support the British players as well as everyone else. I hit some nice shots for them, which was good,” he added.
Lawrie has been able to bag the Claret Jug once before. He can do it again. He just needs to be consistent for the next three days.
