British Chris Wood closes in on maiden victory at the Iberdrola Open – Golf news
British player Chris Wood is close to his first European Tour victory as he heads into the final round of the Iberdrola Open with a four shot lead.
Wood posted a one under par 69 in the third round and is at nine under par overall. Four shots behind the leader are Shane Lawry and Darren Clarke. Lawry matched the course record after posting a seven under par 63 in the third round whereas Clarke carded
a second consecutive 70.
“I have extended my lead by one which is good, but it was pretty tough today and I thought that I played pretty well and didn't really get the rewards I deserved,” said Wood. “A lot of my birdie chances stayed out, but overall it was a good day. I felt I
was pretty flawless on the front nine today so I just need to do what I have been doing and hole a couple of more putts and I should be alright. It's pretty solid at the moment.”
Wood still has not won on the European Tour but has a long list of top ten finishes. He finished in the top five at the British Open in 2008 and 2009. He also tied for the second place at the Africa Open in January 2011.
He had a decent day as he started off with a birdie. Playing safe and securing his lead, Wood parred most of his holes. Another birdie came on the tenth hole as the player missed the shot on the 14th hole. Wood has been showing a lot of consistency
in this tournament as he has made only three bogies so far.
Spanish Jose Maria Olazabal charged into the top names on the leader board after posting a four under par in the third round. He played really well despite not being well prepared for the tournament as he was attending his dear friend Seve Ballesteros’ funeral
on Wednesday. The 2010 Ryder Cup captain made 23 putts as he set the golf course on fire with five birdies during the third round.
