  1. Check out thisYHA site to give you a picture of hostel rates and facilities around Australia:

If you rent somewhere, it may be cheaper (but maybe not)but you'll be stuck in one place for at least 6 months at a time as it will be difficult to get a flat for a shorter time than that. The only places that take short term bookings are holiday apartments and they're much more expensive than a flat or a hostel.

Public transport is good in some places and pretty bad in others. The main problem is that this is such a big country that things to see and do tend to be spread out all over the place. If you can afford to buy a cheapish car, I'd suggest that would be a good idea and of course you'll sell it before you leave and get at least some of your money back. You can sometimes come across good deals on cars, vans and campervans from departing travellers at city hostels so don't buy anything when you first get here until you've had an opportunity to look into what's available at the time.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in Oz.

  2. There are backpackers all around the country. Your question is a hard one as don't know if you want to travel or stay in a city to work. If you stay in a town or city look for shared accomodation just go to a backpackers to start with and get the newspapers . Public transport is good backpackers will be about $20 a night
