  1. well I'm all electric so fortunately don't have any gas, but I am sure that my supplier EON will be putting up prices any day now for electric well into double figures.  We've all had several massive rises over the last few quarters but people kept quiet about it because as long as their house prices were going up, they felt affluent.  Now the economy is sliding into recession this is just another kick in the teeth for the public.  Already thousands of pensioners die of hypothermia in the UK every year (in the 4th richest country in the world).  God knows how many will die this coming winter.  Yes, clean coal fired stations like the Japanese have would be great in the relative short term (next few decades) but we need to  plan to get off fossil fuels after that - though I hardly think our short term numbskull politicians or self serving energy companies are up to the job.

  2. they actually said that they going to increase by a stunnish 35%!!!!

    incredible!!!!

  3. Your roast beef sucks also. But what are you going to do?

  4. i make lots of gas.....i just cant work out a way to utilise it........seamanab

  5. We are being robbed by corporate criminals.  I am aware of what is happening internationally, but these crooks are passing it on with massive mark-ups.  We need a government that will take command and regulate prices in such a way as to protect the most vulnerable members of society, reopen the pits Thatcher closed, and direct investment into renewables.

Or, better still, renationalise the b******s without compensation.   New Labour won't do it.  A real Labour government would.  We need to give Brown, Moribund and the Man of Straw etc the boot - and tell Darling to Move Over!

  6. Re Nationalise the energy industry is the only option.

We had the North Sea bonanza, but if we haven't got our own supply we have no control of the price and to cap that we are paying share holders dividends. (British Gas ceased trading at 318p/share today).

It would be nice to revert to coal, only Mrs Thatcher knackered that around the time she was selling off the rest of the Nations energy supplies. Poland would no doubt be pleased with the idea.

I don't see much other option than investing in nuclear, but it has to be in the peoples hands. Privatised utilities don't work, they will also put profit first.

  7. Its quite disturbing how these company's are exploiting the consumer yet nothing is done to stop it should the Government not step in with tax cuts or something that will help us out.

BP have blamed the price of petrol on the cost of world oil, yet in the last 6 months they announce a £6.25bn profit which to me says the aren't struggling at all but simply fleecing the consumer :)

  8. We still get 80% of our gas from the North Sea.

The gas companies are basing their prices on the 20% which they import.

    And we stand for it.

  9. I'm in the states and my gas just went down to $3.75.

Enough bragging we all need the Gov't to think about the people FIRST not their corperate supporters. We need nuclear, Clean coal and alternative energy. If it is bad for us think about how bad it will be for our kids. The developing countries will keep damanding more and more. Take some of our tax money and offer it as an incentive to whoever comes up with alternitives. IE: fuel from seaweed, solar etc.

  10. they will be looking to increase by another 50% in january because they go on wholesale prices. we need to start rioting.

  11. Ooh you devil, I was going to post a Q about BG and you beat me to it.

To say this rise is grossly unfair is an understatement. They are charging whatever they like despite making HUGE and RECORD profits year on year, the govt regulators are letting them, and it is obscene for such an essential utility company to ask for a rise on this magnitude. It will hit everyone, inflation spirals again of course, but it will hit our elderly and vulnerable this winter the most. I am so disappointed about this latest rise and the govt are doing nowt.

It would seem that many of the utilities have not reinvested their obscene profits in securing the very essential product that it sells to us. Whether this is also 'engineered' / conspired by the govt in order to create the right climate for justifying nuclear energy, only time will tell. I am against nuclear power stations simply because I don't fancy having one in my back yard - or even in your backyard.... We still have billions of tons of coal and we can build very clean and lean coal fired power stations these day and I think that we will have to re open those pits that THATCHER wanted closing down so eagerly. But also, this would create tens of thousands of jobs in mining, supporting industry and make mining towns great places to live and work. You are right, something great and drastic needs to be done. Waiting is not an option - but try telling this to Gordan (Moron) Brown. I want to start a war - but I don't know where to start.

  12. Am with British Gas and going to shoot myself now!! When will these price increses end?!!!!

  13. The economic laws of supply and demand are controlling these prices.  Yes, coal and nuclear and some wind power can help the situation greatly..  There is no short term solution, only long term solutions.  More drilling for gas could also help, including offshore and on government lands.
